ECSA South Africa

The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) provides the recognised registration system for engineering in South Africa (recognised both locally and abroad, as well as by other professions). The registered engineers with ECSA get public recognition as the informed public values the professional registration. By registering, you attain recognition from the ECSA committee that you fulfil the minimum requirements expected of a professional person. Moreover, you receive various benefits after receiving the ECSA professional registration, such as:

  • Peer recognition
  • Public confidence
  • International recognition
  • Marketability
  • Membership of certain voluntary associations
  • Professional status

The professional recognition you obtain by becoming a member of the ECSA inculcates a sense of confidence in the minds of the public as they are assured that the apex professional body has assessed your skills. However, getting such professional recognition is not easy; applicants have to prove their eligibility through a valid and compelling application. Many applicants find it difficult to produce an impressive competency application.

How To Obtain The ECSA Registration?

To get registered with ECSA, you are required to lodge an application adhering to the stated guidelines. ECSA registers individuals in certain prescribed categories of registration. The categories are:

1. Professional, which is distributed into:

  • Professional Engineer;
  • Professional Engineering Technologist;
  • Professional Certificated Engineer;
  • Professional Engineering Technician

2. Candidate, which is distributed into:

  • Candidate Engineer;
  • Candidate Engineering Technologist;
  • Candidate Certificated Engineer;
  • Engineering Technician

3. Specified Categories, prescribed by the ECSA council

The candidate category only provides for the registration of the persons who fulfil the academic requirements for registration in the professional categories referred to above and who are going through professional development (preferably) under a commitment and undertaking.

The specified category provides for registration of individuals who cannot register in the professional category but who do very important work of an engineering nature, which has a direct influence on public safety and health.

ECSA Assessment Process

When you complete the application, including the payment of the application fee, the assessment process starts. Your qualifications are checked to confirm that it is accredited, recognised or that you have completed the education requirements. If your application fails this check, you will be advised to apply for an education evaluation. If your application passes this check, the assessment proceeds.

The first step of the assessment is the experience appraisal, a desktop analysis by peer reviewers to determine whether your application indicates that you are competent to the standard. If you pass this evaluation, the next step is the professional review, an interactive evaluation in the form of a short presentation by you and an interview by two peer reviewers. The reviewers recommended that the Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) for the discipline that you have showcased competence in or not.

Further, the PAC may register your application for up to 12 months to allow you to make up for shortfalls in competence. Such deferment might be granted twice, but no more. The PAC recommend to the Engineers registration committee and the central registration committee that the application be refused. Suppose the application does not pass the experience appraisal. In that case, it is referred to the discipline PAC to determine the next step, including getting more information from the applicant or deferring the application.

Once the PAC has decided to register your application, you will be registered as a professional engineer, advised by letter and a registration certificate issued. Then you will be liable for pro-rata payment of an annual registration fee with pro-rata refund of the candidate’s annual fee if registered as such. Additionally, on registration as a professional engineer, registration as a candidate engineer will be cancelled if you were so registered.
