Nature of the Project:

The career episode selected concerned the actions taken to meet the Client’s requirement to upgrade the 22-floor Commercial building from Seismic Zone-1 to Seismic Zone-3.

Objectives:

My Company was the Main Contractor for the construction of a 22-floor commercial building. My Company had started work on the site, and after erecting the structural works up to the Ground floor, the Client intended to strengthen the structure to withstand Seismic zone-3 effects.

As structural works had already begun on the site, the main objective was to strengthen the building without affecting progress or adding time.

Statement of Duties:
  • One of my major responsibilities was to attend to the Client’s new requirement. Preparing and submitting the latest proposals for the project’s Consultant and Client approval.
  • Making sure the proposal to be submitted for the Client’s approval accomplishes the use of the company’s available resources, follows best construction practices, and aligns with the project completion date.
  • Regular discussions and coordination with the Site’s construction and technical teams.
  • Regular Coordination with the external designers for the design progress of the new project’s requirements.
  • Preparing the cost plans for the variation works. Submit the variation package to the Client/Project’s consultant for review and approval.
  • Negotiating the submitted variations to make sure the official variation order is issued before varied works, and also, looking after the official close-out of the variations.
  • Arranging the required Manpower, equipment and material to perform additional works.

Nature of the Project:

The career episode selected concerned actions taken regarding an HVAC subcontractor at Dhahran Techno Valley Company (DTVC) and Building No. 78 of KFUPM, which consists of construction and detailed engineering design for the Research & Development building and Laboratory building.

Objectives:

My Company was the Main Contractor for the construction of the DTVC and Lab building within the KFUPM area. This project was an LSTK (Lump Sum Turnkey) project, and my Company had complete responsibility for the design and construction.

My company, following the traditional procurement route, had appointed a Subcontractor for the complete engineering, supply, delivery, installation, and testing & commissioning of HVAC works for the project mentioned above. This career episode concerns the actions taken to address the consequences when the appointed HVAC subcontractor stated they would not proceed with the HVAC work.

Statement of Duties:
  • I am responsible for attending commercial and contractual issues of the Subcontractors.
  • Recording subcontractors’ site progress and certifying their monthly progress invoices.
  • Resolving the contractual/commercial issues of the Subcontractors. Providing significant inputs for finalizing the Purchase Orders to the Subcontractors.
  • Regular discussions and coordination with the Project’s construction and technical teams.
  • Coordinating the procurement activities of the project to make sure the materials are delivered to the site before starting the related construction activities.
  • Preparing the cost plans for the variation works. Submit the variation package to the Client/Project’s consultant for review and approval.
  • Negotiating the submitted variations with the Client to make sure official variation orders are issued before work commencement, and also, looking after the official close-out of the variations.
  • Arranging required Manpower, equipment and materials to perform additional works.

Nature of the Project:

The case selected was for additional work on a mega-infrastructure project to develop an isolated area along the Amman-Riyadh highway.

Objectives:

The main objective was to find a feasible solution for the disposal of the ineffective sewage water system, which was not within my Company’s (Main Contractor) scope of work.

During the final stages of the project, the Client found that disposing of the Sewer water system was ineffective. The Client had requested my Company (Main Contractor) to submit a proposal for the disposal of Sewage water.

  • I am responsible for addressing the Project’s/Client’s new requirements and preparing and submitting the latest proposals for the Project’s Consultant’s and clients’ approval.
