Engineers Australia Assessment Reviews and Appeals

By James Anderson October 30, 2025 CDR Assessment

A successful skills assessment outcome is compulsory to apply for the Australian visa. If any individuals are dissatisfied with their assessment outcome, they can request a review and, if needed, lodge an appeal. An assessment review and appeal is generally for candidates who are unhappy with the result of their CDR assessment. Such candidates can request Engineers Australia to reconsider its decision.

The review is managed internally by an assessor who had no prior involvement in the original application. In comparison, an appeal is the final step towards challenging both the original assessment and the review outcome. It is conducted by seasoned, experienced experts, either from Engineers Australia or industry, who thoroughly assess both decisions and then make fair, transparent, and independent final decisions.

When an Applicant Can Request a Review?

  1. The assessment panel did not consider all the relevant submitted materials
  2. The assessment panel considered the irrelevant information
  3. The assessment was biased, which disadvantaged the applicant
  4. Due process was not followed

What are Requirements to Submit a Review Application?

  1. Applicants must lodge the request at least 90 days (3 months) before the assessment outcome letter is issued.
  2. They need to clearly outline the grounds for the review and provide a letter explaining the reason for requesting the review.
  3. They are required to complete and submit the review application through the online form.

Review Process and Its Outcome

Once the candidates have requested a review, the internal review assessor, independent from the original application, reviews all the necessary and relevant information used in the former assessment decisions. Moreover, candidates can submit new evidence only if specifically requested by the assessor. This process to review the CDR Report can take up to seven weeks to complete.

They will receive the review outcome via email. If the review is successful and the original assessment decision is overturned, their revised outcome letter will be issued, and the review fee will be refunded. If the original decision is preserved, the review assessor will detail the reason for their decision. If the candidates are not satisfied with the review outcome, they can further lodge an appeal.

Requirements to Request an Appeal to Engineers Australia

One can request an appeal if they have received the review outcome. To appeal:

  1. They must lodge within six months before the date of the original assessment outcome letter.
  2. They need to clearly outline the grounds for the appeal and provide a letter explaining their reasons for requesting it.
  3. Complete and submit their appeal application through the online form.

Appeal Process and Outcome

Upon receipt of the appeal request, an independent appeal manager (who was not involved in processing the review or original assessment) will process it and constitute an appeal panel of subject experts from Engineers Australia. The panel reviews all relevant information submitted by CDR writers Australia from both the original application and the review to make its final decision.

The panel will consider new evidence during the process if they have specifically requested or allowed under circumstances as determined by Engineers Australia. This process can take twelve weeks to complete.

Candidates will receive the appeal outcome via email.  If the appeal is successful and the review decision is overturned, their revised outcome letter will be issued, and the review and appeal fees will be refunded. If the original decision is preserved, the panel will provide a detailed explanation. The appeal is the final step and cannot be challenged further.

The pricing for review is AU$357.50, including GST, and for appeal is AU$682, including GST.
